ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at the organisation and outcome of college selection procedures as they were perceived by the sixth formers in our sample. It is concerned both with the expectations which the sixth formers held about college interviews and with the extent to which non-academic selection supplemented selection in terms of examination results. There are six main sections: the first two discuss theory and research on occupational values and selection procedures. The third examines our own survey material on college interviews. The fourth and fifth sections compare the successful and the unsuccessful applicants for university and training college, while the final section compares the university and the training-college entrants.
