ABSTRACT

Art therapists and psychologists can potentially benefi t from collaborating in the clinical assessment and treatment planning process using drawing-based measures. The present chapter addresses this intersection. Recommendations for further refi nement of respective approaches across these two disciplines are presented. Discussion of psychology’s infl uence on the development of art therapy in the United States, and the infl uence of psychological assessment approaches in art therapy set the tone for the chapter. Mutually benefi cial ways in which art therapists and psychologists can learn from each other in the context of assessment are explored, including a description of global ratings and formal elements as applied to scoring artwork, and consideration of important moderating variables such as artistic ability and experience with drawing.
