ABSTRACT

When Holmes arrived in Basrah from London on the morning of 15th February 1934 he was met by Chisholm, who had come there from Abadan, at the airport and they proceeded together by car later in the day to Kuwait arriving at 5.30 p.m. Holmes had brought with him from Cairo the Arabic translations of the KOC draft concession document which he had had prepared there en route from London. Before leaving Basrah they telegraphed to Shaikh Ahmad and the Political Agent in Kuwait announcing their arrival, and when passing through the Customs post on the Iraq/Kuwait frontier at Safwan they received a reply from the latter welcoming them in the joint names of himself and of the Political Resident who was then visiting Kuwait. The wording of the reply 'welcome to the heavenly twins', was a fair indication of the friendly attitude towards them of those officials, who must have been as glad as they were that their long period of business antagonism was now ended.
