ABSTRACT

I. The Workers in Britain When he lived in Manchester Engels followed the fortunes of the working class movements in Europe with close attention. He was not discouraged by the failure of the revolutions of 1848 for he believed that new risings of the workers would soon spread across the length and breadth of Europe. He was convinced that the next trade depression in England would spark off a revolution owing to unemployment and distress. He was confident that the reactionary governments on the Continent would soon be overthrown by popular insurrections, while in Russia the serfs would rise in a great peasant revolt to gain their freedom.
