ABSTRACT

TheideaofoneAfricaunitingthethoughtandidealsofallnative peoplesofthedarkcontinentbelongstothetwentiethcentury, andstemsnaturallyfromtheWestIndiesandtheUnitedStates. HerevariousgroupsofAfricans,quiteseparateinorigin,became sounitedinexperience,andsoexposedtotheimpactofanew culture,thattheybegantothinkofAfricaasoneideaandone land.Thus,lateintheeighteenthcentury,whenaseparateNegroChurchwasformedinPhiladelphia,itcalleditself"African"; andtherewerevarious"African"societiesinmanypartsofthe UnitedStates.
