ABSTRACT

In sub-Saharan Africa grazing lands extending in the raindeficient areas are found in the north and the east, as well as in the south-western parts of the continent. In the Sahel the southern limit runs from Dakar and then follows the northern frontier of Nigeria towards Lake Chad; then it runs to the east crossing the White Nile and turning in a north-easterly direction to join the Red Sea coast at Massawa. In the east of the continent the borderline follows the ridge of the Ethiopian mountains leaving Eritrea as well as a large part of Harrar, the whole of the Somali Democratic Republic and northern and eastern Kenya within the rain-deficient area. It eventually reaches Lake Rudolf and turns in a south-easterly direction excluding the Kenyan highlands and cutting into Tanzanian territory.
