The Development of Trade in Livestock The territories situated in Southern Africa between latitudes 18° and 27° S., and between longitudes 21° and 28° E., inhabited mostly by the Tswana people, were proclaimed a British Protectorate in 1885. Ten years later its southern part, including the capital town of Mafeking, was transferred to Cape Colony. In 1966 the Protectorate achieved independence and its name was changed from Bechuanaland to Botswana.
