ABSTRACT

Our case studies have shown a considerable degree of uniformity. Human overpopulation already exists in some of the pastoral societies, others are dangerously close to it. Animal overpopulation is the rule in the regions which, with a different system of range management, could become far more productive than they have been before. The age-old pastoral attitudes and institutions survive, resulting in a precarious combination of unrestrained livestock accumulation and the common use of pastures.
