ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at the challenges faced by academics in traditional higher education in the adoption and use of open educational resources. The author reports on an extensive study conducted with a range of early career academics in anticipation that this group would likely be the most open to innovative approaches to teaching and that they also may be most in need of proven teaching materials. Are OERs a saviour for these hard-pressed academics or an additional burden at a time when proving teaching capability is the most pressing issue? Reedy provides a fascinating account of the challenges inherent with the selection and use of any third-party resource and rounds out the chapter with a set of key pointers that have emerged to guide would-be adopters in overcoming common barriers.
