An idiom is a phrase which has a meaning that speakers of a language can understand, although the meaning is often different from what the words normally mean. In other words, it is a phrase with an actual meaning which is different from its literal meaning. For example, the idiomatic expression ‘to be in hot water’ means to be in trouble.
