ABSTRACT
The main aim of this paper is not so much to provide answers to questions about the nature and extent of dependence or independence to be found in the institutions of the Maghreb today – rather, we are concerned to explore the prior problem of ensuring that the questions themselves are suitably formulated. In particular we have to ask what is entailed in trying to assess institutional dependence by measuring ‘distance’ from a metropolitan ‘model’.
