ABSTRACT

The Broader Arab Perspective In many respects the turn of 1923-1924 marked the end of a six-year 'settling-down' period for Zionism in post-War Palestine. Even if an understanding with the Arabs was not yet imminent, the security aspects of the Arab question were now well in hand; the opposition led by the MeA was visibly weakening; and the international diplomatic gains of the peace settlement were at last safely enshrined in the Mandate for Palestine, unaltered by the recent Arab non-cooperation campaign. But the struggle for the consolidation of the Zionist position had simultaneously involved meeting challenges on yet another front: the Arab world beyond the boundaries of Palestine. Let us now go back over the period to place the local, Palestinian, Arab-Zionist confrontation in this broader perspective.
