ABSTRACT

This chapter explains the first part of our 3-D model, the dimensions within which expatriates have to adjust. In this chapter, we outline in detail the dimensions of adjustment: the cognitive, the affective and the behavioural. In each case, the expatriate has to deal with the issues of living and working in another country. We note that each dimension has both an internal and an external element. We also point out that although adjustment to each dimension is connected to the others, they may not all operate in lockstep, so that expatriates may adjust more or less well in each dimension at a rather different pace.
