ABSTRACT

In this chapter 'fellah rebellion' is considered to be a movement of resistance against the ruling authority whose participants are predominantly fellahs, i.e. settled peasants. Accordingly, we have excluded from our discussion rebellions of semi-sedentary and tribal populations, such as the Kurdish revolts and the insurrection of 1920 in Iraq. Similarly, we do not intend to deal with wars between different groups of peasants, such as the feud between the Qays and Yaman factions or the communal clashes in nineteenth century Lebanon.!
