ABSTRACT
List never again held public office in Wiirttemberg or indeed anywhere else in Germany. No longer either a Regierungsrat or a professor, he at last felt able to speak his mind freely. As secretary of the Union of Merchants he broke out of the narrow confines of Wiirttemberg to playa political role on a larger stage. But he did not turn his back upon the constitutional conflict in Wiirttemberg and in July 1819 he allowed his name to be put forward in Reutlingen as a candidate for election in the new legislative assembly.
