ABSTRACT
For many years List conducted a campaign in favour of the establishment of a unified railway network for the whole of Germany. Although his advice was not taken,2 the fact that Germanydivided into many states - built railways faster than many of her neighbours,3 was probably to some extent due to List's persistent advocacy of this form of transport.
