ABSTRACT
Emergence is a key concept in complexity theory, but it is vaguely defi ned and somewhat controversial. Emergence can be a useful concept for complexity researchers, but its history and the controversies surrounding it should be understood and it should be carefully conceptualized before it is applied to specifi c situations.
