ABSTRACT

Family tree structures are used to trace the derivation and evolution of key concepts employed in history. A key task of those teaching history is to get class members to see the historical evolution of key ideas and concepts, as well as their inter-relationship along the way. This exercise encourages pupils to produce the family trees of concepts, showing their original derivation and their connections with related ideas. There is much scope for debate on both of these elements and the exercise should bring this to the fore.
