ABSTRACT

This simple truth has not been - and psychologically cannot be - accepted by most military professionals, who feel compelled to 'take action' and 'impose order' on their environment. Their daily vocabulary is replete with such 'take charge' words as command, control, communication, management, and planning, all of which connote a sense of mastery over the environment. They must find answers to immediate problems, and often lack the time to ask questions. The danger of this approach is that they may live under the illusion that they can be in command of events and operate according to predictable patterns of behavior, whereas in fact this is rarely possible.
