ABSTRACT
The Burma campaign bequeaths us two puzzling legacies. Both have been identified by Louis Allen, whose penetrating and compassionate account, Burma, The Longest War, sheds so clear a light on that war. Although, on the evidence available, I find myself disagreeing with his conclusions, he has done us a service in pointing out the discrepancies which led him to form his suspicions.
