ABSTRACT

As you reach the end of this book, these questions probably make a great deal more sense. They point us away from settling for easy answers by asking us to consider that the relationship between sexual identities and the media cannot easily be explained. From the beginning we have stressed that neither sexual identities nor media are stable objects of study. The makeup of human sexuality is complex, fluid, and historically variable. The idea that our identities are linked to our sex lives is a fairly recent belief in human history. It is a mistake to think of them as “progressing” toward a fixed end point of liberated equality.
