ABSTRACT

Environmentalism is a very broad concept, extending from concern about traditional forms of pollution, such as emissions of dangerous substances into the air and the water, to the protection of endangered species and the aesthetic purity and integrity of natural landscapes. Humane treatment of animals is also sometimes considered an environmental issue, as well as a matter of public morality. 1 It has been increasingly recognized that environmental problems cross national boundaries, and that many of the most pressing challenges cannot be addressed adequately without international cooperation and international rules – climate change is the most dramatic present-day example.
