ABSTRACT

Forty years after the passage of Title IX, 1 sport participation for girls and women at all levels – youth, interscholastic, intercollegiate, professional, Olympic, and Paralympic – is at an historic high. The most recent data from the National Federation of High Schools and the National Collegiate Athletic Association indicates over 40 percent of US high school and collegiate athletes are female and many professional women’s sport entities are thriving (e.g. WNBA, LPGA, WTA, National Pro Fastpitch). In addition, the number of female athletes in the 2012 London Olympic Games outnumbered that of male athletes for the first time, and female Paralympians in 2012 were twice the number from a decade earlier in the 1992 Barcelona Games.
