ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the work of the French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu. During his career, Bourdieu wrote prolifically on a remarkably wide range of issues in society. As examining all of his work in one chapter is not possible, we will focus on three of Bourdieu’s concepts that will enable us to see the social world through his eyes: habitus, field and capital. We will use examples from the world of rock climbing to illustrate the theory.
