ABSTRACT
While speaking your language actively in conversation clearly has a role to play for anyone learning a language, and particularly for student interpreters with ‘B*’ languages, it is not a substitute for expansive language exposure. ‘Language exposure’ means reading in, and listening to, the foreign language. It fulfils different learning needs from, say, conversations with native speakers. Given the possibilities afforded by the internet, a lack of contact with native speakers is no longer an excuse for inadequate language exposure.
