ABSTRACT

In this chapter we look at two types of combustion engine. These are the reciprocating piston internal combustion engine and the gas turbine engine, both engines having been the mainstay of the power plant, automobile and aircraft industries for many years. We will not be covering reciprocating steam engines or steam turbines in this chapter, but information on these will be found on the website (detailed in the introduction to Part III) under the information given on vapour power cycles.
