ABSTRACT

The American jurist and law professor Oliver Wendell Holmes once remarked that “a page of history is worth a volume of logic.” There is an inherent logic to this observation in that human nature, sociological behavior, and cultural beliefs tend to exhibit a degree of stickiness. More often than not, change typically occurs in a slow evolutionary manner, not through sudden paradigm shifts; and, therefore, studying how societies responded in the past to different social, technical, economic, and political forces can produce valuable insights for predicting future behavior.
