An effective response to an epidemic (as to any widespread cultural crisis) depends on the existence of identities for whom that epidemic is meaningful and stories that take up those identities and give them life. Though plentiful, the identities AIDS scripts for women have rarely worked to expand women’s own awareness of the epidemic or to further social change.
