ABSTRACT

While there has been a flurry of interest in intelligence-driven approaches to crime control over the last few years, the origins of intelligence-led policing stretch back considerably further, and are a little indistinct (Gill 2000). This chapter begins by reviewing the environmental shifts and managerial changes within law enforcement that have created a landscape conducive to intelligence-led policing, and then explores the specific conditions in the UK and the US as illustrative of the influence that the local environment can have on police strategy.
