ABSTRACT

Mathematics has always been a difficult subject for many students. In the last 6 years, 41 percent of high-school students in the Caribbean passed mathematics at the “ordinary” level (Caribexams. 2004). This chapter discusses an m-learning system, MobileMath, that was developed to address the high failure rates in mathematics in secondary schools in the Caribbean. Mobile technology was chosen to address this problem, given its attractiveness to high-school students and the readily available mobile infrastructure in the Caribbean. The design and implementation of the m-learning system are presented, and the results of several evaluation studies are discussed. The chapter wraps up with a mention of future plans for this project.
