ABSTRACT
Recent electoral developments have come to challenge that view. There is some evidence that the class cleavage is weakening and there is also a growing polarisation of electoral support between the south-east of England and the north, Scotland, and Wales. The electorate is now generally understood to be regionally based with economic conditions affecting the distribution at the margins.1
