ABSTRACT
On 10 October 1954 a famous flyer wrote to a grieving widow: I was deeply touched by your husband's wish that I should scatter the ashes over Salisbury Plain. I will, of course, do so . . . I always had admiration and affection for your husband and will always remember his kindness and help in the early days at Farnborough.
