ABSTRACT

In the previous chapters we considered how to improve your academic writing. This chapter looks at ways of enhancing your writing still further, without running the risk of plagiarising or copying other people’s work. All writing is tailored to an audience and obeys certain principles. One of the

key differences in academic writing is that it is solely intended to enlarge the understanding of a topic for the reader. Therefore your writing should contain information from other sources as well. This enhances your reader’s understanding and enables them to consult the sources if they wish. You may have assumed that the purpose of your learning to write academically is to enable your lecturer to ascertain your level of knowledge and understanding and check your background reading. To an extent this is the case, but it is also to prepare you for the time when you may be making a contribution to the learning of others.
