ABSTRACT

What is research? How does research apply to counseling? How do I, as a beginning counseling student, incorporate research into what I am learning about counseling and my writing? What steps do I take to effectively search databases, construct literature reviews, and conduct research? At fi rst glance, answers to these questions may seem rather simplistic and obvious; however, such issues often lead to high levels of anxiety, apprehension, and hours of wasted time spent by students who initially struggle with research and writing in their graduate studies (Galvan, 1999 ; Szuchman, 2002 ).
