ABSTRACT

In 1985 the first anthology of psychoanalytic feminist criticism was published. 1 The title of that collection, The (M)other Tongue, is not easy to pronounce: both "The Mother Tongue" and "The Other Tongue," or perhaps not Quite the mother tongue nor Quite the other tongue. The title is not Quite in our mother tongue (spoken English), although not in any other. It brings out the other in the mother.
