Introduction

Late in 1981, perhaps it was actually at the MIA Convention, Elizabeth Abel invited me to write a response to the feminist issue of Critical Inquiry that was about to appear. The present book begins there, although of course at the time it was not yet even the hope of a book but a ten page occasional piece and a chance to get published in Critical Inquiry.
