ABSTRACT

The process of developing a new vision and mission, and a new forward plan for a museum needs to be seen as part of a professional development programme for staff. It provides multiple learning opportunities. It is useful to expose the museum’s staff to other ways of thinking and working, through for example study visits to other museums or allied institutions, a set of seminars or workshops on standards led by external professional facilitators, external reports and presentations on different aspects of the museum’s work, such as market analysis and research, conservation assessments or interpretation, or simply guided reading. This helps to generate new thinking to feed into the forward planning process and makes cultural change easier to implement.
