ABSTRACT

The director of a small museum with a limited budget developed a series of ‘topic fi les’. The fi les covered issues such as conservation, design, display cases and education, and provided a ready source of information when the need arose. Copies of articles, suppliers’ information, fact sheets from museums associations, references to publications, lists of key websites and contact names and addresses were all included. Whenever a member of the museum’s staff needed information, the topic fi les were a useful fi rst source of information and a signpost to other sources. A system of this type needs to be kept up to date if it is to be useful.
