ABSTRACT

As part of the development of its collections storage facilities, an independent museum undertook a detailed assessment of the different options available to it. They included refurbishment of existing storage facilities, new build nearby, and new build at a distance from the museum. Different criteria were used to assess the options, a number of which were directly concerned with natural resource management issues. They included assessment of the energy effi ciency of the new storage facilities and the costs in use, confi rmation that the different types of wood to be used in their construction and fi tting-out could be sourced from sustainably managed woodlands, and appraisal of the different modes of transport needed for moving collections and staff to and from the new stores.
