ABSTRACT

Here we discuss two special types of partnerships in the museum – Friends’ organisations and volunteer groups. The key difference between Friends’ organisations and volunteer groups lies in the type of support they each provide. Friends’ organisations provide support in kind – work for the museum, while volunteers provide practical, ‘hands on’ support – work in the museum. Both can be invaluable in their contribution to the museum’s overall work programme, provided that their aims and objectives are clear and their work adds value to that of the museum.
