ABSTRACT
The history of collecting and the formation and management of collections is a fascinating and complex field of study. Collections have been formed in countries throughout the world for many centuries, and collecting as a human endeavour takes place for many reasons in and outside museums. It is possible, however, to detect general underlying trends in collecting at different periods, and to analyse collecting in a variety of ways.
