ABSTRACT
In addition to systematic programmes of fi eldwork, the museum staff will acquire a great deal of casual information as part of their everyday work. For example, a museum manager giving a lecture to a local community group might be told about the history of an old house, about the sighting of rare animals, about traditional local customs or about a geological formation briefl y exposed by engineering work.
