ABSTRACT

The principles on which museums need to consider the return and restitution of cultural property are enshrined in two key documents – UNESCO’s Convention on the Means of Prohibiting and Preventing the Illicit Import, Export and Transfer of Ownership of Cultural Property 1970 and the UNIDROIT Convention on Stolen and Illegally Exported Cultural Objects 1995 (see Unit 109). Every museum should integrate the principles of these Conventions into its collecting and disposal policies (see Units 44-45).
