ABSTRACT

The collections in the care of the museum form the principal resource from which all other activities fl ow. As we note in Unit 55, the museum’s responsibilities to its collections should be paramount. Without collections, there is no museum. The duty of care for the collections is thus central to the museum’s work and should be implicit in the museum’s mission statement and its organisational objectives. Conservators, whether they are employed directly by the museum or brought in to the museum on a contractual basis, have an important role to play in helping to plan for the conservation needs of the museum.
