ABSTRACT

Preventive conservation is about ensuring that the museum’s collections are displayed, handled, stored and maintained in sustainable ways that do not lead to damage or deterioration, and that they are preserved, as far as possible, in an unchanging state. While deterioration can be significantly slowed down through good preventive conservation and management of environmental conditions, it cannot be completely arrested, and most types of material change are irreversible. Remedial conservation is about repairing damage or decay to collections, using techniques that are reversible. Effective preventive conservation should reduce the need for remedial conservation.
