ABSTRACT

While there has been some progress in both government and business in this country in coming to grips with environmental problems, we have not done nearly enough to develop a sustainable society. Our relationship with the environment has not really changed and we continue to view it in instrumental fashion as there to be exploited and manipulated for human purposes. We continue to think of ourselves as separate from the natural environment and do not really feel a connection with it that is something more than an objective recognition that it at least exists and needs to be taken into account. Yet humans are embedded in a natural environment and are intertwined with that environment. Everything we do as humans involves the environment in one way or another. We are part of the natural world and cannot survive apart from our natural environment. Thus we are intimately connected with it whether we like it or not, and cannot separate ourselves from the environment in which we are embedded.
