ABSTRACT

The social view of the self and its relation to community as described in an earlier chapter has implications for an understanding of the corporation, both in terms of an understanding of the corporation itself and its relationship to the broader society in which it functions. Within the philosophical framework that pragmatism provides, the corporation is seen as a social entity rather than strictly an economic entity that has only economic impacts and responsibilities. The corporation is a social community in itself and is also part of a larger community. These two aspects of the corporation are diff erent from the way in which the corporation is normally understood and has implications for its role in society.
