ABSTRACT

Local protected areas are an important resource for policy makers and can be a benefit, not a burden to local populations. By considering the ecosystem services they provide, local policy makers can identify potential benefits to the communities they represent, and provide motivation for the establishment of protected areas (PAs) beyond solely nature conservation – that of enhancing local human well-being.
