ABSTRACT
Essays are commonplace and often tiresome to mark, so that assessors are in danger of ending up like Mr Krook in Bleak House: he disappeared in a puff of smoke caused by spontaneous self-combustion. If assessors do not become clearer about why they set essays, the equivalent fate, academically speaking, looms.
