ABSTRACT

Many degree courses incorporate the assessment of aesthetic elements; these courses include, for example, creative writing, fine art, sculpture, furniture design and landscape gardening. In each case, they obviously require the assessment of techniques, for example, techniques of painting, drawing, wood planing, stonemasonry and technical competence in language for use in writing poetry. But as well as these, there is an element that needs to be assessed that is based on how beautiful, how aesthetically pleasing the final outcome is, and problems always arise here in that these tend to be subjective decisions.
